What is a Vibration Assessment?
A Vibration Assessment is an evaluation process designed to measure and analyze the levels of vibration exposure that employees experience in the workplace. The assessment helps to identify potential health risks related to vibration, particularly in industries where workers regularly use vibrating tools or machinery. In Northern Ireland, employers are required to assess and control vibration exposure under the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005 to ensure the safety and well-being of their workforce.
Types of Vibration
There are two main types of vibration that are typically assessed:
Hand-Arm Vibration (HAV) – This type of vibration occurs when workers use handheld power tools, machinery, or equipment that transmit vibration to their hands and arms. Prolonged exposure to HAV can lead to Hand-Arm Vibration Syndrome (HAVS), a serious condition that can affect blood flow, nerves, and muscles in the hands and arms.
Whole-Body Vibration (WBV) – This type of vibration affects the whole body and is commonly encountered in jobs involving the operation of vehicles, heavy machinery, or construction equipment. Prolonged exposure to WBV can lead to musculoskeletal disorders, back pain, and other health issues.

What Does a Vibration Risk Assessment Achieve?
During a vibration survey, experts will measure vibration levels, assess the risk to workers, and recommend control measures to minimise exposure. This may include the use of vibration-reducing equipment, changes to work practices, or personal protective equipment (PPE) to help reduce the effects of vibration on employees.
A vibration assessment is crucial in ensuring compliance with the Control of Vibration at Work Regulations 2005, reducing the risk of vibration-related health issues, and promoting a safer working environment.
